1876: Pointing Heavenwards – The Spire is Built
- Having completed the additions to the church to increase capacity, Rev. Banner then sought to raise funds for the building of a spire.
- A bazaar was held at St George’s Hall in 1875 to fund the cost of the project, with the spire being built the following year in 1876.
- During the years before & after the addition of the spire, many internal improvements were made to the decoration of the church, such as the donation of statuettes in 1875, an oil painting over the chancel arch in 1879, redecorating of the organ and the replacement of the brass lectern with an oak one to name but a few.
- These alterations are described in detail in the booklet produced by St Bart’s for its centenary in 1850. You can view a copy on the Acknowledgements & Sources page.
